SCARBOROUGH MARSH
EASTERN TRAIL -MAINE

Eastern Trail Alliance
Our Vision..........
Imagine walking - or biking -
mostly through off-road
woodland trails from
Strawberry Banke in
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
to Bug Light Park on Casco
Bay in South Portland.

Eastern Trail
T
he vision, will be a mostly off-road Greenway, free from noise and air pollution, where Maine
families and visitors of all skill levels will enjoy Maine's quiet natural grassy surface part of the trail
beauty. ET, the  vision, will follow the corridor of the nearly forgotten, historic Eastern Railroad,
the first rail line connecting Portland with Boston. The vision is becoming reality. South Portland's
Greenbelt, complete nearly from Casco Bay to the Scarborough town line, is part of the Eastern
Trail. Scarborough Marsh will soon be crossed by a new 2.4 mile section of the off-road ET. The ET
is also the Southern Maine section of the  East Coast Greenway that will connect Calais, Maine with
Key West, Florida.

Portland Greenbelt Trail
On the other end to our north, lies the Eastern Trail Alliance in southern
Maine.
The route begins near Maine's New Hampshire border in Kittery, a town
known as an outlet-shopping mecca.
Some notable diversions as the trail heads north include Vaughn Woods
State Park, along the Piscataqua River in South Berwick; historic homes
along Route 1 in Saco; the wide sandy beaches of Old Orchard Beach; and
Scarborough Marsh, where you can get off your bike and into a canoe for a
few hours.
The route ends at Bug Light Park in South Portland, with its stunning views
of Portland Harbor in Casco Bay.
