SEABROOK NH RECREATIONAL  TRAILS

The East Coast Greenway is the power behind this project, a
non-profit organization that works via a staff based in
Wakefield, RI and volunteer committees in each state to
spearhead and coordinate this enormous trail-building effort.
The Alliance will not own or directly manage any portion of this
trail. Rather, it will be owned and managed by municipal,
county and state agencies. The Alliance works to ensure
continuity and a consistent quality of route.

The off-road portions of the Greenway serve muscle-powered
users of all abilities including cyclists, walkers, skaters, skiers,
equestrians, and people in wheelchairs. Increased public use
will be facilitated by moving more miles of this route off-road
and by the marking of the route with ECG trail markers, the
publication of maps, cue sheets and user guides, and the
provision of common services such as food, accommodations,
and emergency services.
The East Coast Greenway Alliance is a group that
partners with local, state and national agencies and
organization to promote the establishment, stewardship
and public enjoyment of an off-road multi-user trail
linking cities from Maine to Fla.  Along with their help
and the involvement of the
NHDOT, National Park
Service
Service, Rockingham Planning Commission,
Seacoast Area Bicycle Routes (SABR), Eastern Trail
Alliance, Bike/Walk Alliance of NH (BWANH) and
Coastal Trails Coalition, we hope to accomplish this
off-road trail in NH.
According to the United States federal
government, in 1969 approximately half of all
students in the U.S. walked or bicycled to
school, and 87 percent of children who lived
within one mile of school came on foot or by
    bicycle (Bureau of Transportation Statistics
1969). But by the year 2003 the situation had
changed, with only about 15 percent of U.S.
students making the trip to school under their
    own power (Environmental Protection Agency
    2003).
What is the East Coast Greenway?

The East Coast Greenway (ECG)  is often referred to
as an ‘urban Appalachian Trail’. It is an offroad,
multi-use trail that extends 2,950 miles through 25
cities along the East Coast from Calais, Maine to Key
West, Florida. The trail is approximately 21%
complete as off-road path. The balance of the trail is
currently on roads. The ECG is open to walkers,
cyclists, skaters, and other non-motorized uses.
What is the status of the East Coast Greenway in
    New Hampshire?

The goals of the current planning process are to identify
preferred on-road and off-road routes for the NH
segment of the East Coast Greenway; develop an
    implementation plan addressing trail funding
and management; and begin building public support for
trail development. The study area for the
project includes eight Seacoast communities: Seabrook,
    Hampton Falls, Hampton, N. Hampton,
Greenland, Rye, New Castle, and Portsmouth. While an
informal planning effort in 2001 identified
potential on- and off-routes along the NH Seacoast, this
current project is designed to include more
extensive community involvement to lay the
groundwork for trail implementation in coming years.

What is the potential for the East Coast
Greenway in the Seacoast?

The New Hampshire segment of the East Coast
Greenway is envisioned to be a recreational
resource
available to everyone: adults, families, children;
residents and visitors. The Greenway has the
potential
to connect to numerous adjacent natural, historic,
scenic and recreational resources.
